Best Book Out There On Retouching Jul 18, 2009 If you don't like Scott Kelby's Court Jester writing style, get this book. It's written professionally in easy to read phrases. I own both Kelby's and Eastman's book on this topic, and both cover similar things, but sometimes Kelby's results are more to my liking and sometimes Eastman's are. They cover different things too. Excellent book.

Great book for photo editing and restoration May 04, 2009 The problem with most Photoshop books, especially general interest ones, is that they teach all the tools available but have scant examples, and what examples they give usually aren't helpful for completing complex tasks. If you want to use Photoshop for a specific purpose, it is difficult to to figure out "how to get from point A to point B" without further instruction. It's like you have all the knowledge of the tools, and you have the goal in mind, but you lack the experience to apply the tools correctly or in the most efficient way.
Eismann's book is best used as a supplement, as you will need to have knowledge of the basics beforehand.
The best part of Eismann's method of teaching is that it is task oriented. You have a problem you want to fix, like sharpening an image, you can easily look it up and find step-by-step instructions on how to do it. She doesn't just give you rote instructions, but along the way, she'll explain what the tools do and how to use them effectively.
I've learned more from this book than all the other general Photoshop books I have, and it is the best of the photo editing/restoration specific books I have. One caveat: This book is mostly about editing photographic images or restoring photos to their original condition. With the exception of the glamor photo chapter, you won't find much about adding "special effects" to an image. You'll have to get other book for that...

Self-taught Photographer Third Year (2009) Feb 14, 2009 Adobe Photoshop Restoration & Retouching (3rd Edition) (Voices That Matter)
My name is ronald n. tan and I am a Los Angeles-based mens fashion and beauty photographer. You can visit my website: http://www.ronaldntan.com/
Now that I've established my credibility, I wanted to let everyone know how wonderful Prof. Eismann's "Restoration & Retouching" and "Masking and Composition."
I pursued photography autodidactically during summer 2006 renouncing my career in pharmacy and academic lifestyle. An unofficial photographer mentor, Mr. Sean Armenta, recommended I pick up these two books authored by Prof. Eismann.
I ordered "Restoration and Retouching" and "Masking and Composition" on the 29th of December 2006 here on Amazon.com. By Fall of 2007, I had surprised and impressed many with my photography and retouching techniques picked up from reading Prof. Eismann's books cover to cover.
Individual results vary. Unless you have the disciplined and severely passionate desire to learn photoshop, don't think that picking this book up will turn you into a photoshop master over night. You have to put in effort!
Here is what got me through: read the book cover to cover simultaneously knowing your way around the photoshop GUI. When Prof. Eismann discusses a certain menu command or keyword, you should be able to visualize where that command menu. Then, you follow the exercises in the book along with the supplementary materials available on Prof. Eismann's website for her readers.
Once you master the concepts, break away and experiment on your own! Practice on your own images. That is the trick in learning. The experimentation reinforces theory learnt from the book and allows the end-user to apply the grasped principles on your own accord.
If you want to learn photoshop and retouching, pick this book up, read cover-to-cover and experiment on your own with the ideas and principles from the book.
